What actually is Hyrox?

Hyrox is a global fitness race that takes place in large arenas — think ExCeL London, Manchester AO Arena, and equivalent venues across Europe and North America. Each race follows an identical format regardless of where it's held:

That's 8km of total running, broken up by 8 functional workout stations. The stations, in order, are: SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, Rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges, and Wall Balls.

The total distance of the workout stations adds up to around 1km of additional movement, making the overall race roughly 9km of combined effort. Most recreational athletes finish in 60–90 minutes. Elite athletes go under 55 minutes. The back of the field takes 2+ hours.

Who is Hyrox designed for?

This is where Hyrox differs from something like a triathlon or obstacle course race. The format is deliberately accessible. There are divisions for:

The Open division is where the vast majority of first-time Hyrox competitors race. Weights are standardised but manageable — wall balls are 4kg for women and 6kg for men in Open, for example — and the format rewards pacing and consistency over raw power or speed.

Honest take: If you can run 5km without stopping and can do a basic gym session, you're a reasonable candidate for your first Hyrox with 12–16 weeks of proper preparation.

Is it harder than it looks?

Yes — but not in the way most people expect. The individual stations aren't technically difficult. The sled push is heavy but it's essentially just walking with resistance. Wall balls are tiring but learnable. The ski-erg is unfamiliar to most people but not complicated.

What makes Hyrox hard is the accumulation. By the time you're on your 6th run, your legs are already carrying the fatigue from 5 previous running sections and 5 workout stations. Running under fatigue — what coaches call "compromised running" — is a specific skill that needs to be trained. It's the part most first-timers underestimate and the part most Hyrox prep programmes focus on heavily.

What does Hyrox training actually involve?

Specific Hyrox preparation typically covers four areas:

At Esme Hall, our Hyrox prep programme in Lincoln covers all four areas in a private studio with all the relevant equipment. Sessions are structured around your target finish time and current fitness base — whether you're aiming to finish comfortably or chasing a specific time.

How long do you need to prepare?

It depends on where you're starting from, but as a rough guide:

The most common mistake is underestimating the running component. If you're comfortable in the gym but haven't run consistently, start building your running base as early as possible — it's the hardest thing to develop quickly.

Where do Hyrox races take place near Lincoln?

The nearest regular Hyrox events to Lincoln take place in Manchester, Birmingham, and London — all within 2–3 hours. Events typically sell out well in advance, so if you have a specific race in mind, booking early is important. The Hyrox website lists the full event calendar with dates and venues.

Should you do it alone or with a partner?

For a first race, doing Doubles is a genuinely good option. You share the work at each station (one person does the full station while the other runs, then you swap), which cuts the physical demand roughly in half. It also means you have someone to pace off and the atmosphere is usually more relaxed. Many first-time Hyrox competitors do a Doubles race first and then move to Open once they know what to expect.

The honest verdict: is it worth doing?

Hyrox is one of the better-structured fitness events out there. The format is consistent, the atmosphere at events is genuinely good, and having a race date is one of the most reliable ways to stay motivated and consistent in training. It suits people who like having a clear goal to work towards and don't mind a structured, progressive training approach.

It's not for everyone. If you hate running, the format is going to be a grind. If you're not interested in competing — even loosely — the training may feel directionless. But if you're looking for a goal that requires real preparation, produces a real result, and gives you something to talk about at the finish line, Hyrox is a solid choice.
