It starts with a conversation, not a workout
Your first personal training session at Esme Hall begins with a proper consultation. Before anyone picks up a weight, we sit down and talk — about what you're hoping to achieve, what your lifestyle looks like, whether you have any injuries or physical limitations, and what you've tried before.
This isn't a formality. It's genuinely the most important part of the process. The more Esme understands about where you're starting from, the better the programme she can build for you. It usually takes around 15–20 minutes and covers:
- Your main goal — whether that's weight loss, building strength, improving fitness, training for an event, or something else
- Your current activity level and training history
- Any injuries, aches, or movement limitations we need to work around
- Your schedule and how many sessions per week is realistic
- Any lifestyle factors that might affect your training or recovery
A look around the studio
After the consultation, you'll get a proper look around the studio. Esme Hall is a private facility at 6 Exchange Close in North Hykeham — not a commercial gym with rows of treadmills and a sea of strangers. It's a focused, well-equipped training space where every session is coached and the environment is deliberately calm.
If you've had bad experiences in commercial gyms — feeling lost, self-conscious, or like nobody was paying attention — this will feel noticeably different. There's no shared floor with strangers, no waiting for equipment, and no ambient noise competing with your focus.
Worth knowing: You don't need to bring anything to your first session except comfortable training kit and a water bottle. Everything else is provided.
The first actual session
Once you've had the consultation and seen the space, the first training session can begin — or in some cases, it's booked in for a separate visit depending on how much time you have. Either way, the first session is deliberately structured around assessment and foundations rather than pushing you to exhaustion.
This is intentional. One of the most common mistakes in early personal training is going too hard too soon — it leads to excessive soreness, discouragement, and in some cases injury. The first session is about establishing your movement baselines, seeing how you respond to load, and making sure the foundations are right before anything progresses.
Depending on your goals, a typical first session might include:
- Basic movement screening — squatting, hinging, pressing and pulling patterns to identify any restrictions or imbalances
- Light introductory loading on the main compound movements
- Some cardiovascular assessment if conditioning is part of your goal
- A clear explanation of what the next few weeks of training will look like
What happens after the first session
After your first session, Esme will have enough information to put together your programme properly. You'll know what sessions are going to look like, how often you'll be training, and what the first few weeks are building towards.
Most people leave their first session at Esme Hall with two things: a clear sense of what they're working towards, and a realistic picture of what it's going to take. That clarity is valuable — it's what makes the difference between training that sticks and training that doesn't.
Common questions before a first session
Do I need to be fit before I start?
No. There's no fitness level required to begin personal training. In fact, complete beginners often make the fastest early progress because there's so much room to improve. Esme works with people at every level — from those who've never trained to experienced athletes who want better programming.
What if I have an injury?
Mention it when you get in touch and bring it up again during the consultation. Esme will work around any existing injuries or limitations, adjusting movements and load so you're training safely. Beginner personal training and strength training are both approached with injury awareness built in from the start.
How quickly will I see results?
Most people notice something within the first 2–3 weeks — better energy, improved sleep, feeling stronger in daily life. Visible physical changes typically take 6–8 weeks of consistent training. The timeline depends on your goal, your starting point, and how consistently you show up.
Can I try a class instead of 1-to-1 PT?
Yes. If you'd prefer to start with a group environment, our circuit classes are fully coached and suitable for all levels. Some members start with classes and move into 1-to-1 PT later; others do both from the beginning.
